Movie Review! M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin

Shyamalan strikes again 😂

I was angry at the premise the whole time (I've only seen the film) and the simple refusal of anyone to really question the justice of the situation they were all put in. The film did a good job of portraying the four horsemen characters as reluctant despite their certainty and taking no joy in inflicting harm, but the ready acceptance of the righteousness of the god behind the whole thing was really frustrating and baffling. The films villain is off screen and barely addressed and like you I found the ending to be a bit of a cop-out creatively.

Can we recommend books/movies for you to read/watch? If so, I'm recommending "Cloud Atlas". I love the movie!

What pissed me off was the realization that the narrative itself was depicting the "four horsemen" as being in the right, not just factually (their visions are real) but morally (their demand for a sacrifice is justified). It almost felt like the story was ultimately about this couple struggling to overcome their foolish and selfish desire not to be sacrificed or traumatized, when they should really just "let go and let God." The four visitors "felt bad" sure but they still carried out their plan and still accepted the notion that making someone commit murder was perfectly fine. Eff this movie.

His movies have been crappy forever. He tries way too hard . A heavy handed and didactic story teller.
A better 'cabin' movie is 'Zombeavers' . Makes no pretense about being intellectual, socially relevant, or ... good, it's just dam hilarious. Have an edible and check the brain at the door and enjoy the absurdity. (It's about Zombie Beavers...yes, Zombie Beavers😅)

M night is not a good director. He must've gotten a big head after those first two that were good and he has no creativity or discipline left. His films aren't even funny bad anymore. They're literally insulting and disgusting

Nah, I just watched it a couple weeks ago. Was it smart or memorable? Probably not, but I enjoyed my couple hours watching it and Dave Bautista keeps proving that he is a better actor than The Rock.

M. Night has run out of chances with me.

WHO KEEPS LETTING SHYAMALAN MAKE MOVIES? Does he have some profoundly damning leverage over a billionaire? Did all of humanity lose a bet I wasn't aware of? After Avatar, After Earth, Glass, Lady in the Water, the Happening - when is enough enough?

Okay, so I am here to report that this review got me to watch it finally. Stunning performances- particularly from Dave Bautista and Johnathan Groff (the religious dad)- but... I dunno. I don't want to spoil it, but lets just say I think I feel like the movie makes apparently the same error as it's source material: it only explores it's premise only at the at the surface level.

Honestly, it's the kind of job I tend to expect from M. Night Shyamalan but it seems like the source material made the same mistake, so... eh?

I mean, if you're gonna have "Four Horsemen" show up, try (and fail) to convince the family that they need to make a sacrifice- mostly by way of "Ey! I got a wife and kids (or whatever), please don't let me and my family die?!" level of sympathizing, and then to have Johnathan Groff's character lampshade that superficial sympathy by saying "oh, but they were here to help us get to know them- all the aspects of humanity- so we could make our decision!" felt like a massive cop out.

If they had given the "horsemen" the time for us (the audience, who are meant to be rooting for the family in this) to really get to know them- and here I say, when you cast Dave Bautista, freaking USE him!- that would have been less of a lampshade.

Honestly, if you want a much better version of this kind of story, go see 10 Cloverfield Lane.

This is probably the most spot-on movie review that I've ever seen.

The premise of the movie was bad. The actual execution of the story was super bad. Dave Battista was super good.

I spent the whole movie frustrated, and shouting suggestions to the director, while briefly pausing to say, "wow, Dave Battista is just a really good actor" every so often. Then, as the ending approached I said (to my poor, beleaguered wife, who at this point was tired of my suggestions, but agreed about Dave Battista), "they'd better at least give us an interesting ending, and not some happy rainbow bullshit". She agreed, and then Shyamalan gave us some happy rainbow bullshit.
