I wanted to like this as I loved the setting and the boys... but oh boy, by the end I frankly didn’t care. 😅

I'm a fan of Aja, but this was a let down for me. Spoilers: since the beginning it was pretty clear Berry's character was crazy and had created a fairy tale to keep the kids from leaving her and going insane like her, except she was starving them to death. I think the premise was faulty and ahve no idea how it could have been better. Thanx, Emma!!!

I think it came out at the wrong time. In the last month we have been spoilt by some great films in the last month for me Blink Twice, The substance, Strange Darling and Speak no evil.

"Hit or Mid" is the best description of Aja's films I've heard yet.

Halle Berry thrillers and horror films are always completely commercial and formulaic.

I guessed the "twist" within the first 10 minutes so that kind of ruined the rest of the movie for me. maybe I've seen too many horror movies, but it was pretty obvious. Unfortunately, the "twist" in this movie has already been done a lot better previously. I'd recommend it for Halle Berry fans (she is great) or if you really need to kill a couple of hours and like psychological horror. basically a 5/10 movie imho. I did leave the theater sad about one thing in particular though:

SPOILER:

the poor dog at the end

Just saw this two days ago. It sort of reminded me, in theme, of the village in a way as far as the kids being isolated from a modern world...I guess the there was magic, darkness after all though. I would give this a 5/10...Well behind Oddity, Longlegs, and Cukoo in entertainment value. Just meh. I wont watch it again. As far as beautiful, I grew up in that type of setting, and still live near those types of locations, so the setting did little for me. Good review. Scare score of 8 is quite generous.

Sounds like you had a very similar experience with this that I did with High Tension. A fantastic, scary as hell movie taken down several pegs by a choice/twist he made in the final chapter of the story.

Just discovered your channel, and it is now my #1 favorite. I’ve watched plenty of other channels that feature horror reactions, and none of them have ever resonated with me. You, my dear, are a breath of fresh air. Your knowledge base and lovely personality are a strong combination that makes your channel very engaging. This Halle Berry vehicle is not really of interest to me, but I was very interested to get your take on it anyway. Thank you SO MUCH for what you do. 🩸❤

I completely agree with your take here. By the end, it felt too familiar. Fantastic acting by everyone. The kids especially. I do have one issue with this review. What was remotely triggering? I mean, it's pretty goofy that people need to be warned about a potential triggering part of a horror film. Just go ahead and assume that you're going to be triggered. 😆 It's freaking horror! Deal with it.

I thought the acting was solid, especially the child actors.
I bought the story hook line and sinker until the outdoor garden shed scene.

Spoiler Alert!

I don't know why but it fell a little flat in regard to the mom {Halle Berry's character) and that's where the film changes from her to her sons.

Don't get me wrong but I wanted more impact from the brothers but it seemed that their lack of food made them weak and weary so they weren't processing what was happening to them and if they could trust strangers, especially after what their mom told them about the little girl who was screaming for help.

The other little girl who came looking for her father reminded of the aforementioned girl who was left to perish but I am not sure if she was real because of what she did to Samuel.

Overall, I see this as a metaphorical type of film because Samuel inherited the evil, he said quite clearly that mom like his brother Nolan more when before it wasn't heard clearly. earlier in the film.

I believe one brother is possessed while the other is not and now they are both going to be in a whole new world, and it might end tragically for one of them.

I think Samuel will be going down that road his mom did, Nolan might not but his brother might be a bug problem for him.

I felt sorry for the doggie too, he knew the boys were leaving.

I liked Horns, Crawl, Oxygen, so I'll be seeing this new movie. I saw The Substance and had mixed feelings about it. Outstanding first two acts. Hated that final act though.
